Going to Maine? Here's where to stay!

You want to see the great state of Maine, but where to go? Here are our top three picks, and why each would fit your vibe.

How we chose the Top 3

Maine has plenty to offer, and where you visit should depend on what you're into.
We chose the spot for you if you're looking for...
Someplace with a working waterfront and world-class dinner tables on the same block
Someplace where the moose outnumber the tourists
Someplace with a national park as a front yard
Portland: Unmatched harbor and food scene
Portland is the anchor point for any traveler looking to dive into Maine's food scene. The city is truly a working harbor town, not just a theme park version of one. Hop on a ferry for a bit of harbor sightseeing and you'll be shoulder to shoulder with locals ferrying to and from work. Eat your lobster however you please—quick and easy at a dockside shack, or fine and luxurious, butter-poached and plated tableside.

Greenville: Maine is more than just coast
Greenville is proof that Maine's identity doesn't end where the coast does. This is moose country, not lobster country. Greenville sits at the southern tip of Moosehead Lake, the largest lake in New England. Moose actually outnumber people three to one out here, and the town itself stays small and unbothered by the tourist machinery that defines other cities in Maine. Ringed by the Longfellow Mountains, Moosehead lake is a peak into a different side of Maine.

Bar Harbor: Gateway to Acadia
Bar Harbor has a split personality, simultaneously a working harbor town while also the gateway to Acadia's wild edges. The town still runs on a real fishing economy underneath the gift shops and lobster roll lines. Start your day with a walk along the Shore Path and then choose how you want to have your lobster: on a roll, with pasta, or experience the catch live on a lobster boat tour.
